That Smarted A Bit

Our apologies for the absence. The great Remonstrans crash of 2007 was not as much fun as I'd anticipated, and if any other bloggers out there are considering a similar strategy for alarming friends and readers, I would discourage it.

The data center where our server is located went down and we were told it would take about a week to fix. Thanks to Dave's work we at least have an internet presence again and we're trying to tidy up some things. Please bear with us.

I was in New Orleans monitoring Dave's progress from the laptop. Things, when they started coming together for us, came together pretty quickly. Or so it seemed from a distance; actually Dave put in some long hours to do it. The bags of money you all have been sending me should be sent to Dave for a while.

We're now scrounging for the missing posts and comments since 15 January. They exist, but I'm not the judge of how well my copies will serve as replacements. I'm as excited as anyone to find out.

I'll reload Monday's post. A few of you may have seen it before we faded to black, but I can't imagine many did.

And then sometime there will be the dreaded vacation pictures as well.

Or maybe not.

At least I was able to read my Bible more with the extra free time I had...there's no great loss without some small gain, I guess.

Glad to see the site back up--I hope you're able to recover all the data.

I'm thankful to see Remonstrans back up and running. You've definitely been missed! It's been tough starting my day off without your dose of sanity and wisdom. :)

And thanks, Dave, for all of your work. It is much appreciated!

lilrabbi--don't stop now. And don't forget to send the money you're saving on food to Dave.

Meanwhile, now I know how those who watched the burning of the library at Alexandria felt.

Seriously, keeping this blog up can't be cheap...maybe a Paypal donate link is in order? I'm sure the times I've hit the site contributed to the overall load (and by extension, the cost).

Fate found us working our way through the pattern of anger, denial, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

Well, I went through some of those feelings.

I was angered and resentful that something this catastrophic can be so completely out of our hands. The guy we deal with directly [the server] lost a hundred clients over this and was not at all well-served by the data center, which, I understand, no longer exists.

Dave’s diligent work kept me from being too depressed.

I never accepted.

We got e-mails out to some selected friends and readers just to give some sense of what was happening.

As for donations, this is a ticklish subject with me. A while back we had some conversation amongst ourselves about advertising and we passed on the option. There are some who invite givers to share the expense, and that can be legitimate. But I take such a dim view of the way so many get money that I have over-reacted. I would rather be poor than suspect.

Having said that, it’s not at all generous of me to spend other people’s money or deny them compensation. We may have a second round of discussions in light of this frustrating episode.

I’m rethinking my initial opposition to the sale of Paypal Indulgences.

I don't know...

If you start receiving money, you will have to limit what you say.

I know this. It's why I indulge my over-reaction.

I'm such an offensive person one wouldn't expect even a healthy cash flow to moderate my views, but I don't want to become like all those nice, wrong people out there. ; )
