Trucker Frank, Webisode 2

...wherein we hear Marie say, "the Friday before church I got in trouble at school" and at church everyone would look at her weird and nobody would talk to her.

We hear Marie say, "They wouldn't accept me, and I haven't went ever since."

And moved with compassion, Tony Jones asks, "What did that do to your relationship with God?" to which Marie logically replies, "I didn't believe in God for a long time, and right now I'm agnostic. I know somebody's up there...I just don't agree with some of the things the Bible says and stuff."

The screen shows a caption: "Marie rejected by her church community."

Tony asks, "If you could design like what you think would be the perfect church, what would it look like, what would it feel like, what would the people talk about, what would be the vibe...?"

Marie replies, "Kind of like a Bible study...you could sit around, say whatever you want..."

Then the camera shows clips of "conversation" at Solomon's Porch.

I won't ruin this cinematic epic for you, but go watch it and remember the context: Trucker Frank is one of the best examples of a new Christian Tony has found (and all these webisodes are really advertisements for his book), and Marie is Trucker Frank's "star student".

It may shed some light on your next exposition of Ephesians.

Is this guy serious? Open source? A passage might mean a different thing to different people? I guess I am naive

Ok, is this like a trick question?

Clearly we are not talking about a serious man here; let’s just say he is in earnest. Yes, this is what he wishes us to accept.

Saying whatever you want may sound like an invitation to theological error, but it is a risk worth taking because we don’t want to be like David Koresh.

Yes, there is an importance in being earnest, but, contrary to the popular opinion of the academy these days, you can only get so far on passion. Overman you may be, but a dead wrong Overman still ends up in Hell.

When in Texas, I used to laugh at the smörgåsbord, roll-yer-own religion. Now, we just have grown adults playing with their food and matches.

The Father is not pleased.

I wonder what Maria did at school that was sufficient to cement in her mind that the kids from church would reject her. Perhaps (and I'm betraying a juvenile optimism here) their rejection was grounded in a view of objective morality that excludes certain vectors of debauchery for its own safety.

I suppose that Romans 16:17-18 probably conflicts rather sharply with lots of other sources in an open-source approach to truth.

Yes, I think that was one of the first questions that occurred to all of us. Did she sneeze without covering her mouth or did she shoot eight classmates and a nurse who wouldn’t give her condoms?

Trucker Frank said he took her side because he’d seen the situation, but he ain’t talkin’.

These emergents sound like a pretty judgmental bunch.

Marie is Trucker Frank's "star student".
Meanwhile, dissidens’ star student Alana remains exiled in dark Byzantium.

Six of one, Professor, half a dozen of the other.

Marie was booted out of the youth group because she and Ben huffed canned air and she passed out in the school parking lot(a bad move she now admits). As far as the star pupil status she was the one who memorized more Bible verses than anyone in the Baptist church AWANA group had ever done. That is all that matters right? Enjoyed the visit. Keep blogging those heretics into submission. ;)

“She now admits” getting high and passing out was a bad idea. Wow, I can see why you emergents consider her a star student.

You say tomayto, I say tomahto; you say heretics, I say clowns.
