King of Kings

As with gladness, men of old
Did the guiding star behold;
As with joy they hailed its light,
Leading onward, beaming bright;
So, most glorious Lord, may we
Evermore be led to Thee.

As with joyful steps they sped
To that lowly manger bed,
There to bend the knee before
Him Whom Heaven and earth adore;
So may we with willing feet
Ever seek the mercy seat.

As they offered gifts most rare
At that manger rude and bare;
So may we with holy joy,
Pure and free from sin's alloy,
All our costliest treasures bring,
Christ, to Thee, our heavenly King.

Very excellent. I just this year became aware that there is such a thing as rich and well-written poetry about Christ's birth. I've found a few by Robert Southwell that I'm really enjoying.

He and Dix and Keats all died young... what is it with good poets and dying young?

Well, not just poets. In the case of many it was just a world-wide fad of the time: disease and short life spans.

In the case of Southwell, he had some help. He was hanged, drawn and quartered. That tended to work against the ripeness of age we all desire.

Shelley died at 29 when his Italian boat, the Don Juan, sank. He drowned, which, from my personal point of view, is an appropriate end for vegetarians.
