Listen And Learn

On a far more pleasant note, I stumbled across this on my way to something else.

There is no picture (which seems to overlook the primary appeal of YouTube), but the audio more than makes up for a lack of video. Beethoven, though I don't number him among my favorite geniuses, was still a genius, and what Andras Schiff explains about the "Moonlight" Sonata is worth your hearing.

Sonata No. 14 in C Sharp Minor, Op. 27 No. 2.

For extra credit, there is also in the "Related Videos" [sidebar right] Schiff performing the Goldberg Variations.

Enjoy.

And not daring to offend the ardent masochists in our readership, I heartily recommend an Irish sacred concert. It's "like drinking Starbucks with Irish cream in it". This man is singing about his God: "what our God is like", to use his words.

I leave you to draw the unsubtle conclusions.

I'm glad to know he's around to explain what makes Arsh music Arsh. Kinda sounds like a high school show choir concert with some commentary for the developmentally disabled members of the audience.

Well, actually he never says what makes Irish music Irish. Through the entire video he does nothing more than identify instruments (the pennywhistle and the bodhran). I wondered if African music performed on the bodhran and pennywhistle becomes Irish music.

Ethnomusicology at its best.

I wonder if word has filtered out to his intellectual galaxy that Irish music (or more specifically, melodramatic adult contemporary pop schlock approximately played on Irish instruments) was a fad that went out of style about ten years ago.

Maybe I could get my Good Samaritan merit badge if I e-mailed him!

Send him a couple of CDs of the Chieftains or The Boys of County Bucks.

Or Derek Bell.

Thanks for the links to Andras Schiff! :) That got my day off to a wonderful start, at least until I was foolish enough to click on your last link, . . .

which was inexpressibly dreadful. I've had a sore neck all day from my involuntary twitches (and I couldn't even stand to listen to all of it). Who is God? What is God like? Nothing like their off-pitch pop interpretation, I am very sure.

I used to feel sad when I heard things such as this, but I am wondering now whether righteous anger is not the appropriate ordinate affection. May God deliver us and our children from such Christianity!

Well, sorry for the neck injury, but I did say it was for the committed masochist. ; )

There’s no doubt anger is appropriate; what you do with that anger is not something I can determine for you. Personally, I think people who send their children and church members off to the Wilds are guilty of child abuse. I’d rather they put marijuana in the kid’s cookies.

It’s almost funny that this is the muck (at Todd’s link) they put out there and then dare to wonder why fundamentalists can’t keep their own kids.

Big mystery!

They wouldn’t listen to Machen or Tozer; can’t save everyone from willful ignorance.

tjp: Now that's hard. Really hard.

You should see how hard it is on those children.

Thanks for the link to Schiff. It gave rise to a teaching moment as we drew parallels between the type and depth of analysis that he applies and what we ought to (and by the grace of God are trying to do here )with our view of God, our handling of Scripture, and its practical implications in our time.

Would that there were more theologians/pastors as capable in their area of discipline as Schiff is in his. If I may be so crass as to advertise, for those of you out there who may not be acquainted with this site (www.firstbaptistgranitefalls.org ), I encourage you to check it out and experience a similar level of thoughtful analysis. We here are blessed to sit under truly edifying preaching/teaching each week.

Keep it coming.

I do believe this is as important as your pastor thinks.

Machen said (back in 1913) “the chief obstacle to the Christian religion today lies in the sphere of the intellect.” I think Dr. Olson has voiced one historic response to that view. By the time we get to 2009, that battle has been lost and now the chief obstacle to piety lies in the sphere of the sensibilities. Now we must work to feel towards God as we ought to feel.

Very tough times.
