Silent Worship

Did you not hear My Lady
Go down the garden singing
Blackbird and thrush were silent
To hear the alleys ringing...

Oh saw you not My Lady
Out in the garden there
Shaming the rose and lily
For she is twice as fair.

Though I am nothing to her
Though she must rarely look at me
And though I could never woo her
I love her till I die.

Surely you heard My Lady
Go down the garden singing
Silencing all the songbirds
And setting the alleys ringing...

But surely you see My Lady
Out in the garden there
Rivaling the glittering sunshine
With a glory of golden hair.

This could be food for much thought, in the context of Scruton's book on Beauty.

I finally took the time to finish the book. I must confess, I was very unimpressed with the opening, and was positively repelled by some of Scruton's thinking early on (chapter 2 is a partiular case, which I may blog about later). However, he gets progressively better, and hits his stride at the discussion of Schubert's Winterreise. This is a key insight, and introduces the discussion about "culture", which I found to be very enlightening. Definitely worth reading the book for that, and I'm guessing that's why you recommended it.
