Prayer Of Confession

Most wise and generous Father, we acknowledge and confess our self-indulgence. We have abandoned your paths and we have foolishly chosen a way that seemed good to us. We have looked on your goodness and counted it a small thing. We have despised your word and pursued our own vanities. We have squandered your blessings and hoarded our own conceits. We are false in our convictions, presumptuous in our speech, insincere in our confessions, perfunctory in our repentance, tardy in our obedience, and casual in our worship.

Have mercy upon us.

Amen.

And we still have a fish on the back of our car, and the dial set to Christian radio. Surely, you speak of someone else.

Yep, I fear that is where we're at and I don't see any desire for change.

Excellent. May I have permission to quote this prayer sometime?

I've actually quoted you before, (with attribution) it was from
your post a year ago (almost to the day): "God bursts into his creation with light and song and angels and prophecies and miracles and kings and shepherds, but nothing captures our attention like the tinsel and the cookies." -(how true!)

Blessings ~

Sure; feel free to use it anytime and any way you like. As far as I’m concerned you don’t even need to cite me as the source, certainly not for prayers of confession.

As one of my favorite pamphleteers once said, “We neither ask nor expect any form of payment, but we would like to be cited as the source. But if admitting that you read this [blog] will get you into hot water, we will be the first to understand.”

I had never seen that link. Can I now cite Mitchell without his name? He does get one into trouble in English department courses.

It’s an interesting question. As far as he was concerned, readers were free to plagiarize him.
"A little note from the author: Permission to Copy and Plagiarize"
I always found that admirable. He also showed, his generosity notwithstanding, that people still got into trouble.

So as far as I’m concerned, his generosity cannot trump intellectual integrity.
